Epilepsy Coffee Morning

Epilepsy Coffee Morning. Come along and meet other parents of children and young people with SEND, enjoy a cuppa and share your views with us regarding your child’s education, health and social care needs and the support they receive. Caroline Bennett, a Roald Dahl Paediatric Epilepsy Nurse Specialist, will also be attending to give a presentation and answer questions about the epilepsy service in Leeds and what she can do to support families. William Merritt Disabled Living Centre

The William Merritt Centre provides impartial information, advice and assessment on equipment and practical aspects of daily livings for disabled people of all ages, their carers and professionals. Anyone can contact the centre directly for an assessment, alternatively referrals can be made via GPs, OTs and other health care professionals. Our paediatric Occupational Therapists offer assessments involving: buggies, wheelchairs, wheelchair accessible vehicles, beds, seating and Try B 4 U Fly. We also regularly run tricycle, walkers and car seat clinics. Our paediatric therapists can arrange assessments with companies who specialise in paediatric equipment and offer advice on how to purchase products. If statutory funding is not available, our therapists are happy to write a report to support charity applications for funding. The centre also provides a service called Switches 4 Kidz, whereby we provide impartial information, advice and assessment about adapted toys and switches for children, families and professionals and the centre has developed a loan library of adapted toy and switches for families to borrow. Following on from this we provide assessments for accessing games consoles, computers, iPads, phones etc. and run regular accessible gaming drop in sessions during school holidays.

AWARE

Airedale & Wharfedale Autism Resource (AWARE) is a support group for families affected by autism. We produce a monthly newsletter, provide e-updates throughout the month and have a very active closed facebook group for members. We hold parents’ and carers’ meetings with knowledgeable speakers, regular socials including dads’ meet-ups and parent training courses. We also run lots of events for children, young people and their families including a weekly youth club; holiday play schemes; monthly cookery club and trip club for teenagers with autism; moving-on club for 18-25’s; residential short breaks for children 8-18 years and family residentials. We run our events in Airedale, Wharfedale and Bradford. We are open to any family whether their child has a formal diagnosis or not and from any area;  however due to funding some of our services are only available to children from a particular authority. We ask families to join which is £15/year and this can be done on our website https://aware-uk.org
