Airedale & Wharfedale Autism Resource (AWARE) is a support group for families affected by autism. We produce a monthly newsletter, provide e-updates throughout the month and have a very active closed facebook group for members. We hold parents’ and carers’ meetings with knowledgeable speakers, regular socials including dads’ meet-ups and parent training courses. We also run lots of events for children, young people and their families including a weekly youth club; holiday play schemes; monthly cookery club and trip club for teenagers with autism; moving-on club for 18-25’s; residential short breaks for children 8-18 years and family residentials. We run our events in Airedale, Wharfedale and Bradford. We are open to any family whether their child has a formal diagnosis or not and from any area; however due to funding some of our services are only available to children from a particular authority. We ask families to join which is £15/year and this can be done on our website https://aware-uk.org

I work with families who are navigating the SEND system and support them to break down the barriers that are often put in place by schools and LA’s. There is hardly ever a quick fix, it’s a journey like no other but my aim is to armour parents/carers with practical advice and the strength to carry on the fight. Currently funded support available through a Lottery Grant.

At The Donkey Sanctuary in Leeds, we are primarily an equine assisted activities centre, offering Donkey Facilitated Learning (DFL) sessions for vulnerable children and adults. We deliver a dedicated Schools Programme, which sees around 75 children with additional needs each week attending from mainstream and SILC schools across the region. For children who are not quite ready to fully engage with our DFL programme, we also offer Barn Management, which puts elements of our wider work in a fun and informative setting. We also offer a Saturday Club on the first Saturday of each month, which is an extra bookable opportunity for parents/carers to bring along children with additional needs and their families, to benefit from our equine assisted activities. As our busy timetable allows, and by prior arrangement, we can also accept visiting groups: be it from other charities or local support groups; schools and nurseries; day centres and residential homes; or nursing homes and hospices. These are an extra opportunity for us to give the wider community a taste of the work we do here at The Donkey Sanctuary Leeds, and also find out about our fantastic herd. We also throw our doors open to the wider public for this purpose from 3pm to 5pm daily (closed Wednesdays) and from 10am to 3pm weekends and selected bank holidays (closed first Saturday each […]

The Donkey Sanctuary
The William Merritt Centre provides impartial information, advice and assessment on equipment and practical aspects of daily livings for disabled people of all ages, their carers and professionals. Anyone can contact the centre directly for an assessment, alternatively referrals can be made via GPs, OTs and other health care professionals. Our paediatric Occupational Therapists offer assessments involving: buggies, wheelchairs, wheelchair accessible vehicles, beds, seating and Try B 4 U Fly. We also regularly run tricycle, walkers and car seat clinics. Our paediatric therapists can arrange assessments with companies who specialise in paediatric equipment and offer advice on how to purchase products. If statutory funding is not available, our therapists are happy to write a report to support charity applications for funding. The centre also provides a service called Switches 4 Kidz, whereby we provide impartial information, advice and assessment about adapted toys and switches for children, families and professionals and the centre has developed a loan library of adapted toy and switches for families to borrow. Following on from this we provide assessments for accessing games consoles, computers, iPads, phones etc. and run regular accessible gaming drop in sessions during school holidays.
