If you are not sure whether Makaton training is for you, try a Makaton Taster session.  This short session is designed for people who are interested in finding out about Makaton and deciding whether or not to attend Makaton training. The Taster gives you a general introduction into what Makaton is and who uses it, with the opportunity to learn a few signs and symbols too. This one-hour online training, delivered by Nicola Hughes, on Tuesday, March 25th, from 7-8pm via Zoom, highlights the reality of parent carer trauma. Parents will gain validation and awareness of their experiences navigating the system. Professionals will be challenged to reflect on how the system contributes to this trauma and learn ways to reduce harm, rebuild trust, and create change. Book your place>>

The theme for World Down Syndrome Day this year is support and what better way for us to support our parents and carers than a wellbeing night. Join us at 21 Co. in Headingley from 7.30pm on Friday 21st March. The first drink will be complementary and more alcoholic and soft drinks will be available to purchase on the night. Our Youth Club have a trip booked to Gravity Trampolining on Thursday, 17th April at 10am (please arrive by 9:45am). This event is for young people of high school age 11-18yrs. We have initially booked 15 places but more can be added. For this event young people must be supervised and supported by a parent or carer at all times. The Peeps’ book club is a great chance to connect with other H.I.E. families without the full focus being around H.I.E. life. The session is 30 minutes (life is busy!), and we’ll be doing all we can to help ensure that time is purely for you – no children, no talk of H.I.E., just a place to come together and chat over the book that’s been read. We will be running our ‘Trauma and Brain Recovery’ online session. The Peeps online Trauma and Recovery Session is 1 hour and covers how the brain and body are affected by trauma (physical or emotional, experienced or witnessed) and some ways we can start to heal that trauma.  The session is not H.I.E. specific but does consider the lived experiences of our H.I.E. families, both at the birth and as their journey continues.    As well as considering the physical, mental and emotional effects of trauma, the session also introduces a range of support and a ‘toolkit’ to initiate and continue the […]
