William Merritt Disabled Living Centre.

The William Merritt Centre provides impartial information, advice and assessment on equipment and practical aspects of daily livings for disabled people of all ages, their carers and professionals. Anyone can contact the centre directly for an assessment, alternatively referrals can be made via GPs, OTs and other health care professionals. Our paediatric Occupational Therapists offer assessments involving: buggies, wheelchairs, wheelchair accessible vehicles, beds, seating and Try B 4 U Fly. We also regularly run tricycle, walkers and car seat clinics. Our paediatric therapists can arrange assessments with companies who specialise in paediatric equipment and offer advice on how to purchase products. If statutory funding is not available, our therapists are happy to write a report to support charity applications for funding. The centre also provides a service called Switches 4 Kidz, whereby we provide impartial information, advice and assessment about adapted toys and switches for children, families and professionals and the centre has developed a loan library of adapted toy and switches for families to borrow. Following on from this we provide assessments for accessing games consoles, computers, iPads, phones etc. and run regular accessible gaming drop in sessions during school holidays.

Sunshine & Smiles.

Sunshine & Smiles is a registered charity that provides a support network in Leeds for children and young people who have Down syndrome and their families. Until we were founded by a small group of parents, Leeds did not have a support network to help children and families living with Down syndrome. Sunshine & Smiles fulfils this important need and provides a vital role in the community. The charity is parent led and is overseen by a team of four trustees. We have three paid freelance workers who are; a service manager and two support workers. We aim to improve the lives and opportunities for children and young people with Down syndrome. We offer speech and language therapy, regular groups and activities, individual support and advocacy for families, as well as raising awareness and challenging preconceptions in the wider community. We are able to achieve this by establishing links with hospitals, health and education professionals and connecting with other related charities.

Carers Leeds.

The Parent Carer service at Carers Leeds offers support to anyone caring for a child, up to the age of 19, with a disability, additional needs, or a long-term illness. We offer information, advice and signposting, as well as emotional support. We can offer emotional support either on a one-to-one basis, or through our monthly support groups. We can also help with applying for benefits, form filling, advocacy, and supporting families through other processes such as EHCPs or Early Help Plans. We can take referrals from professionals but people are also welcome to self-refer for our service. Below is a video by @CarersLeeds and @irwinmitchell on how to complete a DLA form. It takes people through how to complete a new claim form or renewal to ensure the best possible information is submitted to maximise chances of a successful claim.   http://bit.ly/3ooowNq
