Beyond Behaviour: Understanding Distress & Hormones

Educational Parent/Carer Webinar Workshop

Emotional well-being, distress behaviour and self-care tasks like eating and sleeping all tend to be at the top of concerns that we have for our young people. And to be honest, for ourselves as well. While we often see and address these areas as separate, this webinar will have us learn how they are all inter-connected via the stress response system. We’ll be taking a bit of a deep dive into the nervous system and stress hormones. Think Mrs. Frizzle and the Magic School Bus shrunk down and following what happens when someone’s stress response system is activated. Come along […]

Supporting Your Young Person in Distress & Reframing Challenging Behaviour

Educational Parent/Carer Webinar Workshop

This workshop will first look at challenging behaviours and reframe these to distress behaviours. From there, we can clarify why these distress behaviours are happening and review examples of each. Importantly, we will learn the foundations of boundary setting that work best for neurodivergent young people. While doing this, we will start thinking about traditional parenting advice and how we might need to rethink consequences in order to build a young person’s sense of safety, trust and overall well-being. Each in-person course will have a max of 15 attendees and will be in a Workshop format. The course will run […]

Communication Matters

Communication Matters (CM) is a UK-wide charity committed to supporting people of all ages who find talking difficult because they have little or no clear speech. This can be via paper based communication supports or computer based voice output, we call this AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication). Communication can be compromised across many conditions such as Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Brain Injury, Learning Difficulties and Autism. We have an associate membership of around 400 people. Members come from across the UK and from all the various interests in AAC – personal experience, professional, commercial and research. Members receive copies of our Journal which is published 3 times a year, amongst other benefits. We hold a number of events: most notably our International AAC Conference held over 2.5 days at the University of Leeds each September, as well as UK-wide AAC Information Days (product demonstration days) and Study Days which focus on a particular topic of AAC. We also have many online resources and publications and an AAC Forum. If you are interested in finding out more, please do not hesitate to contact us.

We believe that no one, no matter how complex their disabilities, should be isolated, left out, or unable to fulfil their potential. Our experts offer personalised support through our centres, holidays and short breaks, or in people’s own homes. We are here for everyone who needs us, for as long as they need us – providing early intervention for children, helping young people access education, and supporting the transition into adulthood and beyond.
